The St. Augustine Amphitheatre is on a short list of the best outdoor venues, ranking No. 4 of the Top 50 Worldwide Amphitheatres by Pollster Magazine.

The mid-year ranking was based on the volume of ticket sales between Jan. 1 and June 30. With over 75,000 tickets sold in that period, this marks the highest ranking the St. Augustine Amphitheatre has received.

The Amphitheatre was beaten out only by the famous Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles (No. 1), the Waldbuhne Berlin in Germany (No. 2) and the Greek Theatre in Berkley, California (No. 3).

Daily’s Place in Jacksonville ranked No. 29 on the list with 24,555 tickets sold.

Ryan Murphy, director of the St. Johns County Cultural Events Division and Amphitheatre general manager, attributed the Amphitheatre’s success to it growing reputation “as a great experience for the audience and the artists.”

Over the last six months alone the Amphitheatre has played host to the likes of Willie Nelson, The National, Steve Miller Band and Brad Paisley.

“Sometimes, it’s the only place an artist like Paul Simon or Jack Johnson will choose to play in Florida,” Murphy said.

Murphy said the venue — which has expanded its amenities with more local food vendors and its Front Porch deck area — continues to grow its audience, attracting people from all across Florida as well as other parts of the Southeast, including Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Murphy said he was most impressed by the fact that the Amphitheatre was so high up on the list, surpassing other venues with much greater capacities.
